MQ-1C Gray Eagle overview

The MQ-1C Gray Eagle was developed by General Atomics as the U.S. Army's medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft system. Evolving from the earlier Warrior and Sky Warrior programs, it achieved initial operational capability in 2009 and has supported Army tactical UAS operations at division and corps level. The Gray Eagle provides persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance and can carry precision weapons including AGM-114 Hellfire missiles and GBU-44 Viper Strike munitions. Published endurance, ceiling, and payload figures vary by model and configuration, so the figures in this profile should not be read as universal values for every aircraft.

The Gray Eagle's published payload options include electro-optical/infrared sensors, signals intelligence, and—in selected configurations—Lynx synthetic-aperture radar. Army material describes Combat Aviation Brigade fielding and a Universal Ground Control Station able to support multiple aircraft. Public descriptions of the Gray Eagle Extended Range (GE-ER) associate it with a higher gross weight, improved fuel efficiency, and satellite communications; advertised radius and endurance depend on payload, basing, and datalink assumptions. Ukraine was considered as a recipient in 2022–2023, but no transfer was publicly confirmed, with electronic-warfare and technology-security concerns reported at the time. General Atomics has discussed export opportunities, while public Army material describes continued network integration; neither establishes a new export customer or a universal AI-targeting capability.

Army and General Atomics material through 2025 continues to identify the GE-ER as a fielded Army capability undergoing modernization, while no public U.S. decision has confirmed transfer of the system to Ukraine. Public reporting does not establish a new 2026 export customer or an exact number of upgraded aircraft, so those claims are left open. The defensible current update is continued sustainment and network-integration work rather than a new service-entry event; Gray Eagle remains an operational Army system while its future role is balanced against contested-spectrum and survivability demands.
