MQ-20 Avenger overview
The MQ-20 Avenger, originally known as Predator C, is a jet-powered unmanned combat aerial vehicle developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems and marketed with low-observable features. First flown in April 2009 at Palmdale, California, the Avenger was designed as a faster, higher-flying alternative to turboprop-powered Predator and Reaper aircraft. General Atomics and public reference material report a PW545B turbofan, speeds above 400 knots, and altitudes approaching 50,000 feet, but performance depends on variant and mission configuration. The internal weapons bay, curved inlet, and retractable sensor turret are design features associated with its low-observable aim; they do not prove a particular radar cross-section or penetration capability.
General Atomics has advertised a large internal payload bay and configurations for Small Diameter Bombs, Hellfire missiles, and sensors. Those payload figures and load-outs are manufacturer or proposal data, not evidence that every Avenger has carried every listed combination. Proposed variants include maritime-patrol and Sea Avenger carrier concepts; the latter should be distinguished from the Navy's separately developed and flown X-47B program. The public record supports describing these as proposals and risk-reduction work rather than an operational carrier aircraft.
The Avenger ER has been promoted with a larger wingspan, additional fuel, and long-endurance test objectives. General Atomics has also positioned MQ-20 as an autonomy demonstrator and adversary-air or surrogate platform, but public demonstrations do not establish USAF acquisition, routine joint-exercise tasking, or production readiness in the acquisition sense. Claims that it could bridge directly to Collaborative Combat Aircraft are proposals, not a selection decision.
General Atomics' recent public material continues to show the MQ-20 in autonomy, surrogate, and test-support roles, including the Shield AI Hivemind demonstration published in 2025. Those demonstrations verify continued experimentation, not a USAF production decision or operational deployment. Through early 2026, no publicly announced contract establishes the Avenger as a selected Collaborative Combat Aircraft, so the accurate update is that it remains a mature test and technology platform whose proposed operational roles are not the same as fielded service status.
