The MQ-9B SkyGuardian is the next-generation evolution of the MQ-9 Reaper platform developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, engineered from the outset to operate in unsegregated civil airspace alongside commercial and private aircraft — a capability that previous-generation military MALE drones lacked entirely. To achieve certified airworthiness under NATO STANAG 4671 standards, the SkyGuardian incorporates a traffic collision avoidance system, an onboard see-and-avoid camera array providing near-360-degree coverage, improved de-icing systems for flight through icing conditions, lightning protection, and structural reinforcements that qualify the aircraft for commercial airspace operations. This certification allows the SkyGuardian to operate from civilian airports, transit national airspace without airspace restrictions, and conduct sustained operations over populated areas — capabilities that dramatically expand the geographic and operational flexibility available to operators.
The maritime variant, designated SeaGuardian, adds a Leonardo Osprey 30 active electronically scanned array radar providing 360-degree surface search coverage, an automatic identification system receiver for correlating radar contacts with commercial vessel transponders, and the ability to deploy sonobuoys for anti-submarine warfare. This capability package makes SeaGuardian suitable for extended ocean patrol missions where the combination of surface and underwater surveillance in a single platform provides significant operational advantage over separate assets. Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force selected the SeaGuardian for its long-range patrol requirement, deploying it for surveillance of the East China Sea and approaches to the Japanese home islands. India acquired the MQ-9B in its armed configuration — a $3.99 billion deal for 31 aircraft — representing the largest drone acquisition in the U.S. Foreign Military Sales history.
As of 2025–2026, the Royal Air Force's Protector RG Mk 1 fleet is being established at RAF Waddington, with crews trained at Holloman AFB in New Mexico and operational capability expected to reach full strength by the late 2020s. Belgium's order for four SkyGuardians and Australia's acquisition of MQ-9Bs for the RAAF are advancing in parallel. General Atomics has announced continuous hardware and software upgrades including integration of the AGM-179 JAGM, improved electronic warfare jamming resistance, and an Automatic Target Recognition system powered by machine learning algorithms. The SkyGuardian's design philosophy — building airworthiness certification in from the start rather than retrofitting it — sets the template for a new generation of military MALE UAS designed for operations in an increasingly complex global airspace environment.
