HUGIN Superior overview

The HUGIN Superior is an advanced autonomous underwater vehicle developed by Kongsberg Maritime of Norway. Part of the HUGIN family that has been in production since the late 1990s, the HUGIN Superior represents the latest evolution of the platform with increased depth rating (up to 6,000 meters), extended endurance, and enhanced sensor capabilities. The approximately 6-meter vehicle carries high-resolution synthetic aperture sonar, sub-bottom profiler, multibeam echosounder, and other sensors for detailed seafloor mapping and mine detection.

The HUGIN family has become the global standard for military and commercial high-resolution seabed survey operations. The HUGIN Superior has been adopted by several NATO navies for mine countermeasures, hydrographic survey, and environmental assessment. As of 2025, Kongsberg continues to develop the HUGIN family with improved autonomy, AI-based data processing, and extended endurance. The system has participated in numerous naval exercises and real-world mine clearance operations. Its significance lies in setting the standard for professional AUV operations, with the HUGIN platform having surveyed more of the world's seafloor than any other AUV family.
