REMUS 600 overview

The REMUS 600 is a medium-class autonomous underwater vehicle developed by Hydroid, a subsidiary of Kongsberg Maritime, representing the mid-tier workhorse of the U.S. Navy's expanding family of unmanned undersea systems. The REMUS designation — Remote Environmental Monitoring Units — originated from the system's oceanographic research roots at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, which developed the original REMUS 100 before military applications drove the development of larger variants. The REMUS 600's torpedo-shaped hull, 3.25 meters in length and approximately 240 kilograms, was designed for a depth capability of 600 meters — sufficient to access virtually all coastal and continental shelf environments where naval mines are laid and where hydrographic intelligence is most operationally relevant.

The platform's modular nose section accepts a range of sensor packages including side-scan sonar providing detailed seabed imagery at width up to 200 meters per pass, synthetic aperture sonar delivering centimeter-resolution images of objects on the bottom, a sub-bottom profiler for detecting buried mines or cables, and environmental sensors for oceanographic data collection. Navigation is handled by a Doppler Velocity Log, inertial measurement unit, and depth sensor, with periodic GPS updates when the vehicle surfaces, enabling accuracies sufficient for mine position reporting and return-to-site operations. The battery system supports missions of 20 or more hours at 3-knot transit speeds, allowing the vehicle to survey large areas in a single sortie. Communication with the operator occurs via acoustic modem at depth and via radio or satellite when surfaced.

The REMUS 600 has been adopted by the U.S. Navy, Royal Navy, Royal Australian Navy, and numerous other NATO and partner navies for mine countermeasures, intelligence collection, and hydrographic survey. A notable operational use occurred in 2013 when REMUS vehicles were tasked to search for the wreck of Amelia Earhart's aircraft in the Pacific, demonstrating the platform's commercial and scientific versatility alongside its military roles. Kongsberg acquired Hydroid in 2008 and has continued iterative development including improved autonomy behaviors, adaptive mission replanning when obstacles are detected, and multi-vehicle coordination for cooperative survey operations. As of 2025–2026, the Navy has been expanding its REMUS fleet across multiple variants including the REMUS 300 and REMUS 620 to address evolving undersea mission requirements with a common logistics and training infrastructure.
