AEGIR-S overview
The AEGIR-S is the largest and most capable platform in Sierra Nevada Corporation's AEGIR unmanned surface vessel family, designed for persistent long-range maritime patrol and force projection in open-ocean environments where endurance and payload capacity take precedence over the compactness valued in the smaller AEGIR-F and AEGIR-W variants. At an estimated 15 meters in length with a displacement of approximately 8,000 kilograms, the AEGIR-S can sustain autonomous operations for seven or more days while carrying up to 1,200 kilograms of modular mission payload — sufficient for comprehensive sensor suites, active electronic warfare systems, anti-submarine sonar arrays, or armed strike packages including Hellfire missiles and APKWS guided rockets.
The AEGIR-S is intended to integrate into the US Navy's Distributed Maritime Operations (DMO) and the Royal Navy's Maritime Autonomous Systems (MAS) concepts, operating as a persistent forward sensor node and, when armed, as a standoff strike platform that extends the reach of surface combatants without placing sailors in harm's way. In contrast to the AEGIR-W's demonstrated strike role, the AEGIR-S is primarily envisioned for extended surveillance of shipping lanes, enforcement of maritime exclusion zones, and convoy escort in regions where sustained crewed presence is logistically prohibitive. Limited public specifications reflect the classified nature of the program, but defense analysts have confirmed its existence through procurement documentation and defense exhibition appearances by SNC Mission Systems UK personnel.
