AEGIR-W overview

The AEGIR-W is the combat-proven mid-range variant of Sierra Nevada Corporation's AEGIR unmanned surface vessel family, and the most operationally active platform in the series. Stretching 10 meters with a distinctive wave-piercing stealth hull that simultaneously reduces drag, improves sea-keeping, and lowers radar cross-section, the AEGIR-W bridges the gap between small covert platforms and large, expensive autonomous warships. Its hybrid propulsion system enables speeds exceeding 25 knots and a range of approximately 900 kilometers — sufficient to transit from a Ukrainian Black Sea port to a target area and return, or conduct a one-way strike mission against a priority target. The platform can carry up to 300 kilograms of payload, accommodating everything from warhead packages and sensor arrays to electronic warfare systems and communications jamming equipment.

The AEGIR-W achieved undeniable operational validation when a unit washed ashore on the Turkish Black Sea coast in early 2026, apparently after a mission supporting Ukrainian operations against Russian naval assets. Turkish authorities detonated the vessel as a precaution, confirming it carried an explosive charge. This incident, combined with UK Royal Marines' open evaluation at RMB Chivenor during Exercise Trident Sprint, established the AEGIR-W as one of the most capable and operationally tested Western autonomous surface vessels in active service. Its modular architecture means the same hull can be rapidly reconfigured for ISR, strike, electronic warfare, or autonomous resupply missions, giving operators mission flexibility without requiring multiple vehicle types.
