CUSV overview

The CUSV (Common Unmanned Surface Vehicle) is the U.S. Navy's primary operational unmanned surface vessel for high-risk naval missions, developed by Textron Systems as the central unmanned element of the Littoral Combat Ship Mine Countermeasures Mission Package. The 'Common' in the CUSV designation reflects its design philosophy: rather than building single-purpose unmanned vessels for each naval warfare mission area, the Navy wanted a single hull and control architecture that could be reconfigured with different payload packages to address mine countermeasures, anti-submarine warfare, ISR, and electronic warfare missions within a unified logistics and training footprint. The approximately 12-meter rigid-hull vessel launches and recovers from LCS and other surface combatants using a crane and tow system, allowing the host ship to maintain a safe standoff distance from the minefield or threat area while the CUSV operates autonomously within it.

For the MCM mission, the CUSV tows the Mk 104 acoustic mine sweeping system and the AN/SQQ-32 mine-hunting sonar, essentially replicating the functions that previously required a dedicated Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship — but doing so without the crew of 84 sailors who would otherwise be operating within the minefield. The system's autonomous navigation maintains precise track spacing across the survey area, ensuring complete coverage without the overlaps and gaps that manual steering produces. An operator aboard the host LCS monitors the CUSV via data link and can redirect the mission or recall the vehicle if conditions change, but the autonomous navigation handles the detailed maneuvering that would exhaust a human helmsman over a multi-hour sweeping operation.

As of 2025–2026, the CUSV has completed all major operational testing phases and is being integrated into fleet mine warfare operations, with multiple units deployed to both LCS squadrons and shore-based MCM forces for fleet exercises and actual operational mining surveys. Textron has proposed ASW variants of the CUSV that replace the mine warfare payload with a sonobuoy launcher, towed array sonar, and torpedo launch system — concepts that would allow a single CUSV fleet to cover both undersea threat domains. The Navy is evaluating these multi-mission concepts as it determines how to structure its unmanned surface vessel force for the 2030s.
