The Sea Hawk is an autonomous unmanned surface vessel (USV) developed by L3Harris Technologies for the United States Navy, emerging from a series of experimental Ghost Fleet Overlord trials and the Navy's Medium Unmanned Surface Vehicle (MUSV) program. At 7.6 meters in length with a displacement hull optimized for open-ocean endurance, the Sea Hawk can operate continuously for 72 or more hours at speeds up to 40 knots, covering maritime patrol zones impossible to sustain with crewed vessels at the same cost. Its autonomy stack incorporates radar, AIS, electro-optical cameras, and LIDAR for collision avoidance and rules-of-the-road maritime navigation, enabling extended unsupervised operation with remote human supervision over satellite datalinks.
The Sea Hawk is engineered around a modular mission payload architecture, allowing rapid reconfiguration for mine countermeasures, anti-submarine warfare sonar deployment, intelligence collection, force protection, and logistics resupply. In the context of the US Navy's Distributed Maritime Operations (DMO) concept, vessels like the Sea Hawk are intended to operate as forward-deployed sensors and effectors within a larger networked fleet, extending the sensor horizon of surface combatants and providing persistent coverage of chokepoints without risking human crews. Exercises conducted in 2022 and 2023 demonstrated the Sea Hawk operating in coordinated formations with other USVs and manned warships in the Pacific, validating the concept of human-machine teaming at the tactical level. The platform represents a pivotal step in the US Navy's transition toward a hybrid crewed/uncrewed fleet structure planned for the 2030s.
