Vision 60 Q-UGV overview
The Vision 60 Q-UGV (Quadrupedal Unmanned Ground Vehicle) is a four-legged robotic platform developed by the American company Ghost Robotics that has become one of the most recognizable and operationally evaluated military robots of the 2020s. Unlike tracked or wheeled UGVs, the Vision 60 uses biomimetic quadrupedal locomotion generated by eight electric actuator-driven joints to traverse rough terrain, climb stairs, navigate rubble, and recover from stumbles that would permanently immobilize wheeled or tracked systems. The approximately 51-kilogram platform runs on a battery pack providing 3 or more hours of operation and carries up to 10 kilograms of mission payload, making it suitable for persistent perimeter surveillance, building clearance reconnaissance, and forward-area sensing in environments inaccessible to conventional ground robots.
The Vision 60's sensor suite includes stereo cameras for obstacle avoidance, an optional 360-degree LiDAR unit for simultaneous localization and mapping, and a primary payload slot that accommodates electro-optical/infrared cameras, SIGINT antennas, or chemical detection systems. Ghost Robotics' autonomy stack allows the platform to navigate predetermined routes, patrol perimeters, investigate anomalies detected by the onboard sensor suite, and relay real-time video to remote operators — all with minimal human input after the initial mission is programmed. The USAF pioneered the operational concept by deploying Vision 60s at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida for automated perimeter security following the base's near-total destruction by Hurricane Michael in 2018, where the traditional security infrastructure had been damaged and additional manpower was not immediately available.
The platform attracted global attention in October 2021 when it was demonstrated at the AUSA annual conference equipped with a SWORD International SPUR (Special Purpose Unmanned Rifle) — a remotely operated 6.5mm precision rifle mounted in place of the standard sensor payload. Images of an armed quadruped robot generated significant media coverage and international debate about autonomous weapons, with some commentators comparing it to dystopian science fiction scenarios. Ghost Robotics clarified that the Vision 60 with SPUR is always operated by a human shooter, but the episode highlighted how rapidly the gap between robotics technology and policy frameworks was widening. As of 2025–2026, Ghost Robotics continues to develop the Vision 60 with improved battery life, weatherproofing, autonomy stack refinements, and secure integration with DoD command-and-control networks. Military and government customers in the UK, Australia, and several Middle Eastern nations are evaluating the platform for base security and border surveillance applications.
