THeMIS overview

The THeMIS (Tracked Hybrid Modular Infantry System) is an unmanned ground vehicle developed by the Estonian company Milrem Robotics. Designed as a modular multi-role platform, the THeMIS can be configured for various missions including logistics support, casualty evacuation, ISR, explosive ordnance disposal, and combat by swapping mission-specific modules. The vehicle features a hybrid diesel-electric drivetrain, can carry payloads up to 750 kg, and is capable of semi-autonomous or fully autonomous operation depending on the configuration.

The THeMIS has been extensively tested by NATO forces and has been adopted by several European militaries including Estonia, the Netherlands, France, and Norway. As of 2025, Milrem Robotics has delivered systems for operational evaluation and has partnered with major defense companies to develop weaponized variants and autonomous convoy capabilities. The THeMIS has been tested in harsh environments from arctic conditions to Middle Eastern heat. Its significance lies in being one of the first commercially successful European military UGVs, demonstrating the viability of modular robotic platforms that can reduce the burden on dismounted infantry for logistics and other tasks in contested environments.
