The Type-X Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV) is an unmanned armored fighting vehicle developed by Milrem Robotics of Estonia. Designed as a combat-class UGV, the Type-X weighs approximately 12 tonnes and can be equipped with various weapon systems including autocannon turrets (up to 50mm), anti-tank guided missiles, and air defense weapons. The vehicle features a hybrid drivetrain for silent mobility, modular armor protection, and can operate autonomously, semi-autonomously, or via remote control.
The Type-X is designed to operate alongside infantry units and manned armored vehicles, providing direct fire support while reducing the risk to human soldiers. Milrem Robotics has partnered with major defense companies including John Cockerill (for the CPWS turret), Kongsberg (for weapon stations), and Elbit Systems for various configurations. As of 2025, the Type-X is undergoing testing and evaluation by several NATO member nations as part of the growing interest in robotic combat vehicles. Its significance lies in being one of the first purpose-built UGVs designed for direct combat rather than support roles, pioneering the concept of unmanned armored warfare that many military planners believe will define future ground operations.
