Bayraktar TB3 overview
The Bayraktar TB3 is a carrier-capable combat drone developed by Baykar Technology specifically for naval aviation operations from the Turkish Navy's TCG Anadolu (L-400) amphibious assault ship. Announced in 2021 and completing its maiden flight in October 2023, the TB3 represents a major evolution of the Bayraktar TB2 platform — the world's most combat-proven export drone. While retaining the TB2's aerodynamic heritage and a derivative of its Rotax 912iSc engine, the TB3 introduces a comprehensive suite of naval-specific modifications. Folding wingtips allow the aircraft's 14-meter wingspan to collapse for compact storage on the ship's hangar deck. Reinforced tricycle landing gear absorbs the shock loads of deck landings in sea states up to Sea State 4. The entire airframe receives corrosion-resistant coatings and sealed avionics bays designed for the salt-spray maritime environment. STOL (short takeoff and landing) performance is tuned for the 232-meter flight deck of TCG Anadolu, requiring significantly shorter ground roll distances than the TB2.
TCG Anadolu, the 232-meter amphibious assault ship that serves as the TB3's primary operating platform, was originally designed to embark F-35B short takeoff/vertical landing jets. After Turkey was expelled from the F-35 program in 2019 following its purchase of Russian S-400 air defense systems, Baykar and the Turkish Navy pivoted to equip the vessel with the domestically developed TB3 instead. This decision transformed the Anadolu's concept of operations from a traditional LHD helicopter carrier into what is effectively the world's first dedicated drone carrier — a vessel whose primary fixed-wing air wing consists entirely of unmanned combat aircraft. The Anadolu's hangar can accommodate approximately 50 TB3 airframes in storage configuration, though operational air wings are expected to embark 10–15 aircraft alongside helicopters and other unmanned systems including the Bayraktar Akinci.
Sea trials aboard TCG Anadolu began in April 2024, with the TB3 conducting its first deck takeoffs and arrested landings in the Aegean Sea. The folding wing mechanism — a complex engineering challenge on any aircraft — was successfully validated in deck handling trials in July 2024. Weapon release trials at sea were completed in November 2024, demonstrating precision delivery of Roketsan's MAM-L laser/GPS-guided micro-munition, MAM-C (smaller warhead for soft targets), and MAM-T (tandem warhead designed to defeat reactive armor). The TB3 has also demonstrated compatibility with the Cirit 2.75-inch laser-guided rocket and the BOZOK semi-active laser homing munition, giving TCG Anadolu an organic strike capability effective against armored vehicles, small surface vessels, radar arrays, and troop concentrations at ranges well beyond the ship's horizon.
In January 2025, TCG Anadolu was officially declared operationally ready with the TB3 as its primary fixed-wing combat aircraft, establishing Turkey as the first nation in history to declare an armed drone carrier operational. Throughout 2025, the TB3 and Anadolu combination participated in multiple Turkish naval exercises in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, refining the operational procedures for launching, recovering, and rearming drone aircraft at sea under realistic conditions. Baykar confirmed integration of the ASELSAN CATS advanced targeting system and expanded SATCOM datalink enabling beyond-line-of-sight TB3 control from shore or from other naval vessels. The platform's service ceiling of approximately 18,000 feet and endurance of 24 or more hours give TCG Anadolu persistent surveillance and strike capability far exceeding what its organic helicopters could provide.
By 2026, the TB3 program has matured to the point where Baykar is actively marketing the platform for export alongside the TCG Anadolu concept. Several navies — including those of allied and partner nations studying low-cost sea-based drone power projection — have sent delegations to observe TB3 operations. The concept has profound strategic implications: a mid-tier naval power can now establish credible sea-based combat air power using unmanned systems at a fraction of the cost of a conventional aircraft carrier and its manned air wing. Baykar continues developing the TB3 with planned upgrades including an extended-range fuel system, enhanced electronic warfare self-protection suite, and integration of next-generation Roketsan munitions — positioning TCG Anadolu and its TB3 air wing as a continuously evolving template for the future of affordable naval aviation worldwide.
