Sea Baby overview

The Sea Baby is Ukraine's most operationally consequential unmanned maritime system — a remote-controlled explosive surface vessel that fundamentally altered the strategic balance in the Black Sea by forcing the Russian Black Sea Fleet to abandon its forward basing in Sevastopol and retreat to ports further east. Developed and operated by Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) rather than the conventional military, the Sea Baby reflected Ukraine's intelligence community's recognition that asymmetric naval warfare could achieve strategic effects — denying Russia use of Crimean port infrastructure — that conventional naval forces operating under air and missile threat could not safely attempt.

The Sea Baby's design is deceptively simple: a fiberglass or composite hull roughly the size of a jet ski, powered by an electric outboard motor or small combustion engine, loaded with 850 kg of plastic explosive and steered by a remote operator using a satellite communications link that provides control range over 1,000 km. Cameras mounted fore and aft stream video to the operators who can navigate the vessel around obstacles, align it precisely on target, and trigger detonation on command. The satellite control link is the critical enabler — it allows operators to guide the vessel from territory hundreds of kilometers from the target area, making it effectively impossible to trace the attack back to a specific launch point or to interdict the operators.

The most spectacular Sea Baby operation was the June 2023 attack on the Kerch Strait Bridge connecting Russia to Crimea — a politically and logistically critical piece of infrastructure that Russia had heavily defended. Sea Baby vessels struck the bridge's roadway span in a coordinated attack that caused significant structural damage, interrupting rail and road traffic for weeks. The psychological impact on Russian strategic planning was substantial: if Ukraine could strike the most heavily protected bridge in the Russian military's defensive posture, no rear-area infrastructure was immune. The Sea Baby continued to evolve through 2026, with later versions reportedly carrying onboard EO cameras with AI-assisted steering that reduced operator workload during the final approach phase.
