Marichka overview
Last reviewed:
Marichka is a Ukrainian uncrewed underwater vehicle promoted by AMMO Ukraine for attack, reconnaissance and limited transport roles. Unlike Sea Baby and other low-profile surface attack boats, its intended operating environment is beneath the surface. Public coverage in August and September 2023 showed a large tubular prototype and described a volunteer-supported development effort. AMMO Ukraine presents itself as a charitable foundation, so the organization promoting the project should not automatically be described as a conventional series-production shipyard.
The published dimensions are approximately 6 m long and 1 m in diameter, with a claimed range around 1,000 km. Naval News and The War Zone attribute those figures to the project and contemporary Ukrainian reporting rather than an independently audited endurance trial. A September 2023 video showed the prototype moving under its own power near the surface, an important distinction from a computer rendering. That footage does not establish its maximum submerged depth, speed, warhead mass or ability to travel the entire claimed distance. The propulsion arrangement was not reliably disclosed in the reviewed reporting.
The proposed missions include carrying an explosive payload against maritime targets, gathering information and moving small quantities of supplies. Each would place different demands on payload space, navigation, endurance and recovery. Underwater navigation and communications also differ fundamentally from continuous satellite-linked surface-boat operation: claims of autonomy or interference resistance need more evidence than a general mission description. The existence of a submerged hull does not make the vehicle undetectable, nor does an intended bridge or ship attack prove that a tested terminal guidance system exists.
Marichka attracted attention because Ukraine had already demonstrated the military relevance of uncrewed surface craft, but their successes are not Marichka's combat record. The project was soliciting donations and investment when its 2023 prototype footage appeared. Contemporary quotations of a roughly UAH16 million target unit cost were development-era estimates, not a documented current contract price including support. Through the November 2026 review, the linked public record supports a demonstrated prototype and proposed long-range missions; it does not establish a confirmed operational strike, serial delivery total or independently verified full-range submerged voyage.
