RQ-35 Heidrun overview

The RQ-35 Heidrun is a tactical unmanned aerial vehicle developed by Danish company Sky-Watch, representing Denmark's indigenous contribution to the growing European military drone ecosystem. Entering service around 2018, the Heidrun features a 3.2-meter wingspan airframe weighing 16 kilograms, capable of 5 hours of endurance at ranges up to 80 kilometers. The platform is designed for rapid deployment by small military units, providing persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance as well as force protection capabilities in both conventional and asymmetric threat environments. The system's modular payload bay accommodates various EO/IR sensor packages tailored to specific mission requirements.

The RQ-35 Heidrun has been adopted by Danish defence forces for battlefield ISR and base security operations, with the platform specifically designed to operate in the harsh Arctic and Nordic environmental conditions that characterize Denmark's primary operational theaters, including Greenland and the North Atlantic. The system has attracted interest from NATO partners including the United States and United Kingdom, who have evaluated the platform for interoperability with alliance tactical ISR networks. Sky-Watch engineered the Heidrun for catapult launch and automated recovery, minimizing the logistical footprint required for field operations. The platform's combination of Nordic weather resilience, NATO-standard datalinks, and competitive acquisition costs positions it as a capable European alternative in the increasingly crowded tactical UAV market.
