Protector USV overview
The Protector is an unmanned surface vessel developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems of Israel. One of the earliest purpose-built military USVs, the Protector is a 9-meter rigid-hull inflatable boat (RHIB) converted to unmanned operation, equipped with stabilized weapon stations, EO/IR sensors, and radar. The vessel can reach speeds over 40 knots and operate in semi-autonomous or remotely controlled modes for maritime security, force protection, and coastal patrol missions.
The Protector has been adopted by the Israeli Navy for protecting strategic maritime assets including gas platforms in the Mediterranean, and has been exported to Singapore and other customers. The system demonstrated its combat capability during operations to protect Israeli offshore energy infrastructure. As of 2025, Rafael has continued to develop the Protector family, with the larger Protector USV variant offering extended range and improved autonomy. Its significance lies in being one of the first operational armed USVs in the world, proving the concept of unmanned naval force protection and inspiring the development of similar systems by navies globally.
