ARCIMS overview

The ARCIMS (Atlas Remote Combined Influence Minesweeping System) is an autonomous unmanned surface vessel developed by Atlas Elektronik (now part of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems). The 11-meter vessel is designed for mine countermeasures operations including mine hunting, mine sweeping, and hydrographic survey. ARCIMS can operate autonomously or be remotely controlled, deploying towed sonar systems and influence sweep equipment to detect and neutralize naval mines.

The ARCIMS has been adopted by the Royal Navy as part of its mine countermeasures modernization program, replacing legacy manned minehunters. The system has participated in numerous NATO exercises and demonstrated the ability to conduct mine hunting operations in challenging environments. As of 2025, ARCIMS continues to be a key element of allied mine warfare capabilities, with ongoing upgrades to its autonomy, sensor integration, and multi-vessel coordination. Its significance lies in being one of the most mature autonomous mine countermeasures systems in NATO service, directly reducing the risk to sailors from one of the most persistent and dangerous threats in naval warfare.
