MARLIN overview

The MARLIN is an autonomous underwater vehicle developed by Leonardo (formerly Finmeccanica) of Italy for mine countermeasures and underwater survey operations. The torpedo-shaped vehicle is designed for high-resolution seabed mapping, mine detection and classification, and can operate at depths suitable for littoral and continental shelf operations. The MARLIN features advanced sonar systems, precision navigation, and the ability to operate autonomously for extended missions.

The MARLIN has been developed to support the Italian Navy's mine warfare modernization and has been offered to international customers. The system is designed to integrate with Leonardo's broader naval command and control systems, providing a complete unmanned mine countermeasures solution. As of 2025, Leonardo continues to develop the MARLIN with improved AI-based mine classification algorithms, extended endurance, and enhanced communication systems. Its significance lies in Italy's contribution to autonomous mine warfare technology, leveraging Leonardo's extensive expertise in naval electronics and underwater systems to field a competitive European AUV solution.
