JARI USV overview
Chinese developers have presented the JARI USV as an autonomous unmanned surface vessel for multi-mission naval operations. Descriptions of the approximately 15-metre trimaran show a small-caliber gun, vertical-launch cells, torpedo launchers, radar, and sonar, and identify anti-submarine, anti-surface, mine-countermeasure, and surveillance roles. Those weapons and sensors belong to displayed or reported configurations; public evidence does not establish that one operational hull carries all of them.
The JARI-USV was first displayed at the 2018 Zhuhai Airshow. Chinese exhibition material presents the trimaran as a way to improve stability and sea-keeping relative to a conventional monohull, while reporting has associated the program with PLA Navy testing and evaluation. The display and reported trials demonstrate design intent, not a confirmed fleet requirement, production order, or commissioned unmanned combatant.
The JARI label covers a development lineage rather than a transparently documented single fit. Model changes and export-style exhibition configurations make it unsafe to combine every advertised launcher, torpedo tube, radar, and sonar into one guaranteed vessel. Open reporting supports the existence of the trimaran concept and its intended multi-mission role, but not a confirmed operational loadout or autonomous rules of engagement.
New China TV coverage of the 2024 Zhuhai appearance documented the JARI-USV-A/Orca family as a displayed unmanned combat-vessel concept, while public reporting has not established a commissioned PLA unit or a stable production configuration. The JARI name is also used across related demonstrators, so the gun, vertical-launch, torpedo, radar, and sonar fit should not be assumed to be present on every hull. As of 2026, the defensible update is continued Chinese experimentation with armed and autonomous surface vessels rather than confirmed fleet service for this specific prototype.
