The YFQ-48A Talon Blue is Northrop Grumman's entry in the U.S. Air Force's Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) Increment 2 program, representing the next evolution in human-machine teaming for air combat. Awarded a development contract in 2023 following Northrop Grumman's selection as the prime contractor for the second CCA increment, the Talon Blue draws on the company's extensive experience in low-observable aircraft design — including the B-2 Spirit and B-21 Raider — to produce a stealthy, semi-reusable loyal wingman capable of operating in highly contested environments. The aircraft features an internal weapons bay capable of carrying AIM-120D AMRAAMs and AIM-9X Sidewinders for air superiority missions, as well as GBU-53/B Small Diameter Bomb IIs for ground strike, giving it genuine multi-role capability without compromising its low-observable profile.
Unlike earlier attritable drone concepts that focused purely on expendability, the Talon Blue is designed as a semi-reusable platform with a service life sufficient to amortize its higher unit cost across multiple missions. Its AI mission management system allows it to execute complex tactical decisions autonomously when communication links are denied or degraded — a critical capability for operations in electronically contested environments. The Talon Blue achieved its combat debut during the 2026 U.S.-Iran conflict, where it was deployed in air superiority escort roles alongside F-22s and conducted SEAD missions ahead of strike packages targeting Iranian air defense networks. Its performance in combat validated the CCA concept and accelerated USAF planning for full-rate production and expanded loyal wingman integration across multiple fighter platforms.
