Watchkeeper WK450 overview
The Watchkeeper WK450 is a tactical unmanned aerial vehicle developed by Thales UK based on the Elbit Systems Hermes 450 platform. Designed to meet the British Army's requirement for a tactical UAS, the Watchkeeper features significant modifications from the base Hermes 450 including an all-weather capability, a dual-sensor payload with SAR radar, and certification for operations in UK airspace. The program was initiated in 2005 and the system entered service with the Royal Artillery in 2014 after an extended development and testing period.
The Watchkeeper program faced significant delays and cost overruns, with total program costs reaching approximately 1 billion pounds. Despite these challenges, the system has been deployed operationally and provides the British Army with organic ISR capability at the brigade and divisional level. As of 2025, the Watchkeeper continues to serve with the British Army, though questions about its future have been raised as next-generation UAS concepts are explored. Its significance lies in being one of the few military UAS programs to achieve full certification for flight in European civilian airspace, setting precedents for drone integration into national airspace.
