Ababil-3 overview

The Ababil-3 is an unmanned aerial vehicle from Iran's Ababil drone family, developed by the Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industrial Company (HESA). The Ababil series has been one of Iran's most prolific drone families since the original Ababil was developed during the Iran-Iraq War. The Ababil-3 variant features improved aerodynamics, a pusher-configuration propeller, and can carry various payloads including EO/IR cameras and, in some configurations, small munitions. It has an endurance of several hours and operates at tactical ranges.

The Ababil-3 has been widely proliferated to Iranian-allied groups across the Middle East, with variants reported in the hands of Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis. Several have been intercepted or shot down by Israeli and coalition forces. As of 2025, the Ababil family continues to be produced and exported, representing one of Iran's most widely distributed drone types. The platform's significance lies in its role as a low-cost, mass-produced reconnaissance and attack drone that has been deployed across multiple conflicts by non-state actors, demonstrating the proliferation challenges posed by relatively simple UAV technology.
