Forpost-R overview

The Forpost-R is a medium-range reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle produced by the Ural Civil Aviation Plant (UZGA) for the Russian military. It is a domestically produced evolution of the IAI Searcher II, which Russia had previously acquired from Israel. The original Forpost was a licensed production of the Searcher, while the Forpost-R represents a russified version with domestically sourced components including the engine, avionics, and communications systems. The aircraft has an endurance of approximately 18 hours and carries EO/IR payloads.

The Forpost-R has been widely deployed by the Russian military during the conflict in Ukraine, primarily for artillery fire correction and battle damage assessment. As of 2025, it is one of the most commonly used Russian reconnaissance drones in the conflict. The platform has faced losses due to Ukrainian air defenses and electronic warfare but remains in production. Its significance lies in demonstrating both the challenges and necessities of import substitution in Russian defense production, as sanctions have forced domestication of previously imported subsystems, a process that has yielded a functional but not necessarily superior product.
