Geran-2 overview
The Geran-2 is Russia's domestically-produced designation for the Shahed-136 loitering munition, manufactured under a technology transfer agreement with Iran and initially assembled at the Alabuga Special Economic Zone in Tatarstan before production was expanded to additional facilities as the scale of the war drove demand beyond what a single site could supply. Iran's decision to transfer the Shahed production technology to Russia — rather than simply exporting completed units — reflected both a deepening strategic partnership and Iran's calculation that a Russian Shahed production line would further normalize Iran's export of military technology and establish precedents for future transfers.
The Geran-2's role in Russia's campaign against Ukraine shifted over the course of the conflict. Initially used in relatively small salvos as a precision strike complement to missiles, it increasingly became the weapon of mass infrastructure destruction — launched in waves of 50-150 vehicles timed to overwhelm the fixed number of intercept shots available to Ukrainian air defense. The economics were compelling from Russia's perspective: at an estimated $20,000-50,000 per Geran-2 versus $500,000+ per Patriot or IRIS-T intercept missile, Russia could impose enormous costs on Ukrainian air defense stockpiles by simply launching enough vehicles to force the expenditure of interceptors faster than they could be replaced.
Russia's production ambitions for the Geran-2 and associated FPV drone programs escalated dramatically through 2025-2026, with planning documents calling for multi-million unit annual production across both categories. This scale of production required massive industrial investment — new facilities, trained workers, component supply chains — and competed with other sectors of the Russian defense economy for scarce technical labor. By 2026, Alabuga alone was reportedly capable of producing several thousand Geran-2 units per month, and secondary production facilities in Yelets and other cities had added further capacity, giving Russia a strike drone arsenal of unprecedented scale.
