Searcher overview
The IAI Searcher is a tactical unmanned aerial vehicle developed by Israel Aerospace Industries that became one of Israel's first widely exported ISR drone platforms. Entering service in 1992, the Searcher features a distinctive twin-boom pusher configuration with a 7.22-meter wingspan, providing up to 18 hours of endurance at ranges exceeding 300 kilometers. The platform carries a stabilized electro-optical and infrared sensor payload optimized for real-time intelligence gathering, surveillance, and artillery spotting missions. The Searcher Mk II and Mk III variants introduced progressively improved avionics, datalinks, and sensor capabilities, extending the platform's operational relevance across three decades of service.
The Searcher has been extensively operated by the Indian Army, which acquired the system in the late 1990s and deployed it along the Line of Control and in counter-insurgency operations across Kashmir and northeastern India. Singapore, Thailand, and Sri Lanka also procured the platform for their respective armed forces, making the Searcher one of IAI's most commercially successful tactical UAV programs. The aircraft's combination of robust reliability, moderate payload capacity of 120 kilograms, and proven operational track record established it as a benchmark for the tactical ISR drone category, paving the way for IAI's subsequent development of the larger Heron family of MALE-class unmanned systems.
