IAI Heron overview
The IAI Heron (also known as Machatz-1) is a medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle developed by Israel Aerospace Industries. First flown in the early 2000s, the Heron has become one of the most commercially successful MALE drones globally, serving with numerous air forces and security agencies. The aircraft has a wingspan of 16.6 meters, maximum takeoff weight of 1,150 kg, and endurance of over 45 hours, making it one of the longest-endurance MALE platforms available.
The Heron has been exported to countries including India, Turkey, Brazil, France, Germany, Australia, and Canada, among others. It carries a variety of EO/IR and radar payloads for comprehensive ISR coverage. India has been one of the largest operators, using the Heron extensively for border surveillance and maritime patrol. As of 2025, the Heron continues to serve alongside the larger Heron TP, with IAI offering ongoing upgrades including improved sensors and satellite communication capabilities. Its significance lies in establishing IAI as a leading global drone manufacturer and proving that MALE UAS could be a viable export product, paving the way for the worldwide proliferation of military drone technology.
