IAI Heron TP overview

The IAI Heron TP (also known as Eitan) is a medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle developed by Israel Aerospace Industries. It is the largest UAS in Israel's operational fleet, with a wingspan of 26 meters and a maximum takeoff weight of approximately 5,400 kg. Powered by a Pratt & Whitney PT6A turboprop engine, the Heron TP can operate at altitudes up to 45,000 feet with an endurance exceeding 36 hours. It entered operational service with the Israeli Air Force in 2010.

The Heron TP is reportedly capable of carrying air-to-ground munitions, though Israel has not officially confirmed its strike capability. The platform serves primarily as a strategic ISR asset, providing persistent surveillance across the Middle East. As of 2025, the Heron TP has been offered for export with India and Germany among the known customers. Germany operates a leased Heron TP fleet under the designation 'Heron TP' for operations in Afghanistan and Mali. The aircraft's significance lies in its combination of fighter-jet operating altitude, extraordinary endurance, and heavy payload capacity, making it one of the most capable MALE UAS platforms in the world.
