Sparrowhawk overview
Sparrowhawk is General Atomics Aeronautical Systems' air-launched, air-recoverable small unmanned aircraft concept. A larger MQ-9-class host can carry it into the theater, release it to collect intelligence or support electronic warfare, and recover it rather than expending it after one mission. That arrangement is intended to extend the host's reach and put a specialized sensor or jammer closer to a contested area while preserving the larger aircraft's standoff position.
The central engineering challenge is autonomous mid-air recovery: a small aircraft must separate safely, perform its mission, and rendezvous with a moving unmanned carrier. General Atomics has discussed ISR, SIGINT/ELINT, and jamming roles, but has not released a stable public production specification. Dimensions, speed, range, endurance, ceiling, payload, and weight are Not publicly disclosed, and captive-carry photographs do not prove a final operational configuration.
Sparrowhawk was reported in captive-carry testing on an MQ-9 Reaper in September 2020. Later public coverage continued to identify it as a developmental parasite-UAS effort, without confirming service entry, production quantity, export customers, or an operational deployment through September 12, 2026. It remains significant as a concept for distributing sensors and electronic effects across a network of unmanned aircraft, not as a fielded replacement for the Reaper.
