Cardinal II overview

The Cardinal II is an upgraded mini UAV developed by NCSIST as a direct successor to the original Cardinal, offering improved flight performance, extended endurance, and enhanced imaging capabilities. Entering service around 2015, the Cardinal II features a redesigned airframe with a 2.5-meter wingspan that provides approximately 3 hours of flight time, a 50% improvement over its predecessor. The platform incorporates a more efficient electric motor, improved battery technology, and a stabilized electro-optical/infrared camera capable of operating in reduced visibility conditions.

The Cardinal II maintains the hand-launch capability and portable ground control station of the original Cardinal while significantly expanding operational utility. The upgraded data link provides greater range and improved video quality, allowing operators to maintain situational awareness over a wider area. The system has been fielded across ROC Army and Marine Corps units, serving as the standard small-unit ISR platform for tactical operations. The Cardinal II has proven particularly valuable during Taiwan's annual Han Kuang exercises, providing real-time intelligence during simulated beach defense and urban operations scenarios that form the core of Taiwan's defense planning.
