Cardinal overview
The Cardinal is a mini unmanned aerial vehicle developed by NCSIST for close-range tactical intelligence and surveillance missions at the squad and platoon level. Introduced around 2008, the Cardinal was designed to provide small-unit commanders with organic ISR capability that could be rapidly deployed without specialized support equipment. Weighing just a few kilograms with a wingspan of approximately 2.2 meters, the Cardinal can be hand-launched by a single operator and controlled via a portable ground station.
The Cardinal's compact size and simplicity of operation made it one of the first widely distributed drones within the Republic of China Armed Forces, seeing deployment across army infantry and marine units. The platform carries a stabilized miniature camera providing real-time video feed over a tactical data link, with approximately 2 hours of flight endurance. While limited in range and payload compared to larger systems, the Cardinal filled a critical capability gap by giving forward-deployed troops the ability to look over hills and around obstacles without exposing personnel to danger. The experience gained from fielding the Cardinal helped shape Taiwan's broader unmanned systems strategy and training doctrine.
