The Brontanax is a Ukrainian heavy unmanned ground vehicle developed by a consortium of Ukrainian defense-technology firms under the Brave1 accelerator framework, designed to address one of the most persistent and lethal challenges of attritional warfare: how to deliver decisive firepower into defended positions without exposing soldiers to the concentrated artillery, FPV drone, and anti-tank fire that has made frontal ground assaults catastrophic for both sides in the Russo-Ukrainian War. Named for a portmanteau evoking armored brute force, the Brontanax is built on a tracked chassis derived from Soviet-era engineering but substantially modernized with composite armor panels, electric drive components, and a low-profile hull that reduces the vehicle's silhouette to roughly the height of a prone infantryman. The platform is remotely operated at ranges up to 3 kilometers via encrypted fiber-optic cable tether — eliminating the radio jamming vulnerability that has rendered many wheeled Ukrainian UGVs ineffective — with an optional wireless mode for positioning operations when cable deployment is impractical. Primary armament consists of a stabilized remote weapon station mounting either a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun, a 30 mm automatic grenade launcher, or an ATGM launcher depending on mission profile, enabling it to engage light vehicles, fortified positions, and personnel with equal effectiveness.

The Brontanax's operational concept reflects Ukrainian tactical innovation forged in two years of high-intensity conflict. Rather than replacing infantry, it is designed to precede them — advancing into minefields, treeline positions, and urban structures that would otherwise require infantry to absorb initial defensive fire. Engineers integrated a front-mounted mine-roller attachment and a dozer blade for creating breaches in anti-vehicle obstacles, and the payload bay can accommodate explosive charges for demolishing fortifications or bunker complexes. Early field evaluations conducted in 2024 in the Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk oblasts demonstrated that even a single Brontanax advancing on a defended trench line could cause enemy forces to relocate or expend ATGMs on a platform that costs a fraction of a crewed armored vehicle, fundamentally changing the cost calculus of the defender. By 2025–2026, the Brontanax has moved from field evaluation into serial production, with Ukrainian defense firms producing dozens of units per quarter. NATO members observing Ukrainian operations have expressed strong interest in the platform, particularly France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, which are evaluating Brontanax-derived concepts for their own heavy UGV programs. A naval variant capable of operating in riverine and amphibious environments was unveiled at the 2025 DSEI defense exhibition, featuring a floatation kit and waterproofed drivetrain enabling river crossing and beach assault operations.
