Albatroz Vortex overview

The Albatroz Vortex is a VTOL hybrid unmanned aerial vehicle developed by Santos Lab as an evolution of the fixed-wing Albatroz platform. Introduced around 2020, the Vortex combines vertical takeoff and landing capability with efficient fixed-wing cruise flight, eliminating the need for launch catapults or recovery systems and enabling operations from confined spaces such as ship decks, jungle clearings, and urban rooftops. The platform features a quad-rotor VTOL configuration that transitions to conventional wing-borne flight, achieving a maximum speed of approximately 110 km/h with around 3 hours of endurance.

The Albatroz Vortex carries a stabilized multi-sensor payload including electro-optical and infrared cameras for ISR and aerial mapping missions. The VTOL capability has made it particularly attractive for maritime surveillance operations with the Brazilian Navy, as well as for environmental monitoring and precision mapping applications where the ability to hover for detailed inspection is valuable. Santos Lab has positioned the Vortex as a versatile solution for customers requiring the endurance advantages of fixed-wing flight combined with the operational flexibility of rotary-wing launch and recovery. The platform represents the growing trend in Brazilian unmanned systems development toward hybrid VTOL designs that maximize operational utility across diverse mission profiles.
