SkyStriker overview

The SkyStriker is a loitering munition system developed by Elbit Systems designed for precision strike and suppression of enemy air defenses missions. Entering service around 2019, the SkyStriker features a 2.6-meter wingspan airframe weighing 35 kilograms, capable of loitering over a target area for up to 2 hours at ranges of 100 kilometers while its electro-optical and infrared seeker identifies and tracks targets of interest. The system is equipped with an integrated warhead offering fragmentation or shaped charge options, and critically features an abort capability that allows the operator to wave off an attack and re-engage a different target, distinguishing it from one-way disposable munitions.

The SkyStriker reportedly saw combat use during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, where Azerbaijani forces employed loitering munitions to devastating effect against Armenian armored vehicles, artillery positions, and air defense systems. The platform represents Elbit Systems' answer to the growing global demand for precision loitering munitions that bridge the gap between traditional guided missiles and armed drones. The SkyStriker can be launched from ground vehicles, naval vessels, or static positions, providing tactical commanders with an organic precision strike capability that does not require dedicated air support. Its combination of extended loiter time, man-in-the-loop targeting, and abort capability makes it one of the more sophisticated loitering munition systems on the international market.
