Skylark overview

The Skylark is a family of man-portable mini unmanned aerial vehicles developed by Elbit Systems that has become one of NATO's most widely adopted small tactical ISR platforms. First introduced in 2004, the Skylark I features a lightweight 7.5-kilogram airframe with a 3.0-meter wingspan, powered by an electric motor that provides near-silent operation during low-altitude surveillance missions. The system is designed for rapid deployment by infantry units, requiring only two operators to assemble, hand-launch, and control the aircraft within minutes. The Skylark I-LE (Long Endurance) variant extended flight time to approximately 3 hours with a 40-kilometer operational range, while the larger Skylark II and III variants offered progressively greater payload capacity and endurance.

The Skylark family saw extensive combat deployment in Afghanistan, where NATO forces relied on the platform for route clearance, convoy overwatch, and forward operating base security. Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, and Sweden all acquired variants of the system for their ground forces, making it one of the most internationally successful mini UAV programs in military aviation history. The platform's stabilized day/night EO/IR camera provides high-resolution imagery that is transmitted in real time to a portable ground control station, enabling small-unit commanders to maintain persistent situational awareness across their area of operations without relying on higher-echelon ISR assets.
