Lancet overview

The ZALA Lancet is a loitering munition developed by ZALA Aero Group, a subsidiary of the Kalashnikov Concern. Available in two variants, the Lancet-1 (5 kg) and Lancet-3 (12 kg), the system is designed for precision strikes against military equipment, vehicles, and personnel. The Lancet-3, the most commonly deployed variant, carries a 3-5 kg warhead and has a range of approximately 40 km with a loitering time of up to 40 minutes. It features an electro-optical guidance system for terminal homing.

The Lancet has become one of the most effective and widely used Russian weapons in the Ukraine conflict, accumulating hundreds of confirmed strikes against Ukrainian armored vehicles, artillery pieces, air defense systems, and other military equipment. Videos of Lancet attacks have proliferated on social media, making it Russia's most visible loitering munition. As of 2025, ZALA has ramped up production significantly and introduced improved variants with enhanced anti-jamming capabilities and AI-assisted target recognition. The Lancet's significance lies in being Russia's most successful domestically developed loitering munition, proving that relatively simple and inexpensive precision weapons can have outsized effects on the modern battlefield.
