CATS Warrior overview
Last reviewed:
CATS Warrior is Hindustan Aeronautics Limited's Indian unmanned combat-aircraft demonstrator for teaming with crewed fighters. It is the loyal-wingman element of the broader Combat Air Teaming System, not a collective name for all CATS vehicles. Other concepts, including Hunter, ALFA-S and Infinity, have different roles and must not supply Warrior's specifications by association. The intended mission combines forward sensing, electronic support and strike while allowing a crewed aircraft to remain farther from some threats. This remains a development objective rather than a demonstrated operational squadron capability.
A scale-model mock-up was publicly shown at Aero India 2021. The design subsequently evolved, and HAL announced a successful engine ground run of a full-scale demonstrator on January 11, 2025. A full-scale prototype appeared at Aero India 2025. These are substantial engineering milestones, but an engine run and a static exhibition do not establish an airworthy flight envelope, a completed autonomous teaming demonstration or a first flight. HAL's 2024–25 annual report separately records a November 21, 2024 run of improved PTAE-7 engines in a twin-engine configuration for the CATS-W application.
Public dimensions and performance estimates vary with the design stage. SP's Aviation reported a 9.1 m length, 7.6 m wingspan, 2.6 m height, approximately 2,100 kg maximum takeoff weight, a 700 km range and a proposed weapon capacity around 650 kg in July 2025. Earlier coverage described a smaller 1,300 kg concept with about 250 kg of payload and an 800 km range. These are different reported configurations, not interchangeable measurements. This profile uses the 2025 demonstrator-oriented figures with explicit qualification and does not present either set as flight-validated.
The twin-engine jet configuration and a proposed combination of internal and external stores reflect the desire to balance payload with reduced radar signature. The aircraft has been discussed with electro-optical/infrared sensors, radar, electronic-warfare equipment and air-to-air or air-to-ground weapons. Publicly proposed weapons do not demonstrate completed integration or firing trials. Similarly, shaping and radar-absorbent-material claims are not a published operational radar cross-section. The contributor illustration represents the concept stylistically and should not be used to resolve differences between early models and the full-scale demonstrator.
The program's difficult work extends beyond the airframe. Crewed-uncrewed teaming requires dependable communications, coordinated mission management, autonomous flight behavior and clear human authority over operational decisions. A remotely commanded demonstrator and a future operational wingman may therefore have different software, sensors, engines and certification paths. Public reports have discussed possible future integration with Indian fighter programs, but that does not mean that Tejas, AMCA or other aircraft have already flown a validated operational formation with Warrior.
Some 2025 coverage forecast a first flight in 2026; August 2026 reporting described a revised 2027 or FY2027 expectation. This is a reported schedule change, not proof of an officially guaranteed flight date. The October 24 review found no first-flight confirmation in the sources consulted, so the page records the verified ground-test and exhibition history and leaves future flight and service milestones prospective. No operational operator, export contract, combat sortie or full-scale production run is asserted. That distinction preserves the importance of the program without mistaking a demonstrator for a fielded weapon system.
