Archer-NG overview
Last reviewed:
Archer-NG is an Indian medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft being developed by DRDO's Aeronautical Development Establishment for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and potential armed missions. The aircraft has a single-engine, twin-boom pusher configuration. It must be distinguished from the earlier Archer/Rustom-I and from the twin-engine TAPAS-BH-201 program: development experience can carry over between projects without making their airframes, specifications or test records interchangeable.
Published performance figures vary between reports and development stages. February 2023 specialist coverage described an intended 300 kg weapons capacity. October 2025 reporting instead described approximately 1,800 kg aircraft mass, up to 400 kg payload, 24–29 hours endurance and operation around the 30,000 ft class. These are reported development figures, not an independently verified production specification. In particular, a total payload allowance can include sensors and communications equipment as well as weapons, so it is not automatically the usable bomb or missile load at maximum endurance.
The development timeline illustrates why scheduled dates should not be recorded as achievements. Early 2023 coverage anticipated a first flight later that year, while October 2025 reports described the maiden flight after ground and taxi testing at Chitradurga. Later reporting dates the initial sortie to October 22, 2025; this profile identifies that as a reported milestone rather than presenting a short validation flight as proof of the entire advertised envelope. March 2026 specialist reporting discussed an airborne image and continuing flight-envelope and sensor-integration work, which is still development activity rather than operational acceptance.
Archer-NG is relevant to India's effort to supply indigenous long-endurance surveillance and strike capability, but a broader service requirement or competitive procurement does not itself award this aircraft a contract. The reviewed sources discuss prospective guided weapons and mission sensors without establishing a complete, qualified weapons inventory, an operational squadron or confirmed serial deliveries. Through the November 2026 editorial review, the responsible description is a flight-reported developmental MALE UAV. This profile retains useful reported figures while making clear that configuration maturity, production readiness and customer acceptance remain separate questions.

Proposed guided weapons alongside mission sensors; complete operational weapons qualification not established
Development and operational timeline
- Specialist reporting describes Archer-NG and a proposed 300 kg weapons capacity; the projected 2023 first-flight date is a target, not a confirmed achievement
- Reported maiden flight at Chitradurga following ground and taxi testing; subsequent specialist accounts identify this date
- Public reporting describes the maiden flight and an approximately 1,800 kg/400 kg development configuration
- Specialist reporting describes an airborne image and continuing flight-envelope and sensor-integration trials; operational induction is not established
- Editorial status review: reported flight progress retained, performance figures qualified and no production or operational acceptance inferred from procurement discussions
