Wing Loong II overview
The Wing Loong II (also known as Pterodactyl II) is a medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle developed by the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation under the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC). First flown in 2017, it is one of China's most successful defense exports and a direct competitor to the American MQ-9 Reaper on the international market. The Wing Loong II can carry up to 480 kg of ordnance across 12 hardpoints and has an endurance of 32 hours, making it one of the most capable MALE drones available for export.
The Wing Loong II has been exported to numerous countries including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, and several African nations. It has seen operational combat use in Libya and Yemen by various operators. As of 2025, AVIC has continued to improve the platform with upgraded sensors, satellite communication links, and integration of new munition types. The drone's significance in the defense landscape lies in filling a critical gap in the international drone market, as U.S. export restrictions on armed drones created demand for capable alternatives that Chinese manufacturers have aggressively pursued.
