Wing Loong 3 overview

Last reviewed:

Wing Loong 3 is AVIC's large medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft for surveillance and armed missions. Publicly displayed at Airshow China in Zhuhai in November 2022, it is a separate, substantially larger aircraft than Wing Loong I or Wing Loong II. AVIC Chengdu Unmanned Aerial Vehicle System is identified as its developer and builder. Its introduction was framed around long-distance reconnaissance, time-sensitive strike and persistent patrol, with communications relay and emergency-response applications also described by the manufacturer.

China Daily's contemporary report, quoting AVIC and the chief designer, gives a length of 12.2 m, height of 4.3 m and wingspan of 24 m. The design uses a rear-mounted turboprop with a pusher propeller. Exhibition reporting lists a 6,200 kg maximum takeoff weight and up to 2,300 kg total payload, commonly divided into 2,000 kg externally and 300 kg internally. Those payload categories must not be read as 2,300 kg of usable weapon load in every configuration; mission sensors, external equipment and fuel requirements influence what can actually be carried.

Reported promotional performance includes a range up to 10,000 km and endurance up to 40 hours. These are advertised envelope values, not a public record of an independently observed fully armed flight. At the 2022 show, armament displays and reporting described air-to-surface stores and an air-to-air self-defense option. The often-repeated claim of up to 16 missiles or bombs describes an advertised loading arrangement, not proof that every shown weapon has completed operational integration. Similarly, a computer-generated film depicting anti-submarine, strike and rescue missions is promotional material, not footage demonstrating those tasks in one real sortie.

At the unveiling, AVIC said it was establishing mass-production capacity. That industrial ambition should not be confused with a published customer acceptance, confirmed export delivery or a documented combat deployment. Earlier Wing Loong variants have extensive export histories, but their buyers and operational records cannot automatically be assigned to Wing Loong 3. As of the November 2026 review, the sources linked here substantiate the public platform and its advertised specifications without establishing a reliable variant-specific service-entry date, delivery ledger or independently verified multi-role combat record.

Development and operational timeline

  1. Airshow China public debut: AVIC-linked reporting describes dimensions, long-range roles and work to establish production capacity
  2. Contemporary exhibition reporting highlights advertised intercontinental reach and an air-to-air self-defense option
  3. Trade reporting publishes 6,200 kg takeoff weight, 2,300 kg payload and 40-hour/10,000 km promotional figures; mission film is identified as computer-generated
  4. Editorial status review: public specifications and exhibition capabilities checked; no independently established first-flight date, customer delivery total or combat record added by assumption
