Roadrunner overview

The Roadrunner is a reusable, turbojet-powered autonomous interceptor developed by Anduril Industries as a cost-effective alternative to traditional surface-to-air missiles for defeating the rising threat of drones and cruise missiles. Unlike disposable interceptors, the Roadrunner launches vertically from a compact ground station, autonomously tracks and engages aerial targets, and can return to land safely if a threat is not engaged — dramatically reducing the per-intercept cost compared to conventional missile systems. The system entered demonstrator testing in 2022 and was publicly unveiled at the 2023 AUSA Annual Meeting.

Two configurations exist: the base Roadrunner, which defeats threats via a controlled kinetic collision, and the Roadrunner-M, which carries an integrated explosive warhead for standoff engagement of high-value aerial targets including cruise missiles, helicopters, and manned aircraft. Anduril has positioned the Roadrunner as a core component of its Lattice AI-driven air defense network, where autonomous command-and-control can coordinate swarms of interceptors against complex multi-axis attacks. The U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) and U.S. Navy have both expressed interest in the system, and it is seen as a frontrunner for next-generation expeditionary air defense requirements.

The strategic context for the Roadrunner is the rapid proliferation of drone and cruise missile threats that overwhelm traditional air defense economics — firing a $1 million surface-to-air missile to intercept a $500 commercial drone is not a sustainable equation at scale, and adversaries can manufacture cheap threats far faster than Western arsenals can be refilled with expensive interceptors. The Roadrunner resets this economics by being recoverable: if a scrambled Roadrunner identifies a false alarm or its target evades, the vehicle returns to its launch cradle, is inspected, refueled, and is ready to fly again within hours at a fraction of the cost of a single interceptor missile. For mass drone attacks — the scenario that has come to define Ukrainian and Houthi threat environments — the Roadrunner concept allows a finite ground station fleet to engage many more threats per deployment than an equivalent stockpile of disposable missiles. As of 2025–2026, Anduril is scaling production of both Roadrunner variants, with Navy and SOCOM acquisition programs underway and allied air forces in Europe and Asia evaluating the platform for base defense and expeditionary air defense roles.
