LUCAS overview

The Low-Cost Uncrewed Combat Attack System (LUCAS) is a one-way attack drone associated with Arizona-based defense contractor SpektreWorks. Its configuration is visibly similar to the Iranian-designed Shahed-136, and authoritative reporting describes LUCAS as a U.S. system developed from reverse-engineering work and the company's FLM-136 target-drone model. It is a separate SpektreWorks system, not a derivative of an unrelated loitering-munition family. Public descriptions characterize the design as a low-cost fixed-wing effect intended for scalable production rather than a conventional reusable ISR drone.

SpektreWorks' FLM-136 was presented as a target and threat-emulation aircraft for counter-drone training, while LUCAS is the strike-oriented one-way variant described in later reporting. Publicly reported launch methods include catapults, rocket-assisted takeoff, and mobile ground systems. Military Times, citing U.S. Central Command and defense reporting, gives the FLM-136 family an approximate 500-mile range and a 40-pound maximum payload; those figures should be treated as reported family specifications, not independently verified LUCAS combat performance.

The program moved from public demonstration to documented U.S. employment in 2025–2026. Reporting placed LUCAS prototypes at a Pentagon drone demonstration in July 2025, and U.S. Central Command announced a Middle East deployment in December 2025. On 16 December 2025, the USS Santa Barbara conducted a first-at-sea launch reported by defense media. On 28 February 2026, Military Times reported that CENTCOM confirmed the first combat use of LUCAS in strikes on Iran during Operation Epic Fury; this is a specific reported combat milestone, not evidence that every advertised swarm or autonomy claim has been demonstrated.

Through 2026, official statements and reputable defense reporting support identifying LUCAS as a SpektreWorks Shahed-like one-way attack system with U.S. deployment and a confirmed combat-use report. Public sources do not establish its full production quantity, total cost, command architecture, or the scale of any follow-on procurement.
