The Airbus U740 Valkyrie is the medium-class remote carrier in Airbus Defence & Space's FCAS unmanned portfolio, conceived as a complement to the larger U760 Ravenstorm within the same Remote Carrier family developed for the Future Combat Air System. Where the U760 is optimized for deep penetration, suppression of enemy air defenses, and heavy strike payloads, the U740 is designed to serve the loyal wingman role more directly: flying in close proximity to the FCAS Next Generation Fighter crewed aircraft, extending the manned pilot's sensor envelope, absorbing defensive missiles that would otherwise target the crewed platform, and providing additional weapons capacity in the form of additional Meteor BVR missiles or Spear precision attack weapons. The U740's medium classification reflects a deliberate cost-payload tradeoff — at roughly two-thirds the size of the U760 and approximately half the unit cost, the U740 is designed to be affordable enough to deploy in meaningful numbers (assessed at three to five per crewed fighter in a mature FCAS force) while still providing the performance characteristics — supersonic dash speed, low observable shaping, and EW-hardened communications — needed to survive in the same airspace as fifth-generation and future sixth-generation adversary aircraft.
