X-65 CRANE overview
X-65 CRANE is a DARPA experimental uncrewed aircraft built to test active flow control, also called novel effectors, as a substitute for conventional movable aerodynamic control surfaces. It is a technology demonstrator rather than an operational ISR, strike, or loitering system. The program asks whether jets of air and other fluidic effects can control lift and attitude while enabling new configurations and potentially reducing mechanical complexity or observable control hardware.
Aurora Flight Sciences leads the final aircraft development under DARPA's CRANE program. The X-65's research instrumentation and active-flow-control hardware matter more than payload or weapons, and no complete public flight-performance sheet establishes its speed, range, endurance, ceiling, dimensions, or weight. The aircraft's flying-wing appearance in catalog artwork is not evidence of a production design or a military mission configuration.
DARPA selected Aurora for the final design and build phase after earlier CRANE research, and the vehicle moved toward flight testing during 2024–2026. No operational operator, production decision, export user, or weapon integration has been announced. As of September 12, 2026, the defensible status is experimental development: successful tests could influence future aircraft, but they do not make X-65 itself a deployed combat drone.
