The Matryoshka — named for the iconic Russian nesting doll — is a Russian compact foldable FPV strike drone designed for ultra-portable individual issue to infantry squads. Where most military FPV drones require a dedicated drone operator who carries a separate control system, goggles, and spare batteries, the Matryoshka is designed for the rifleman: small enough to fit in a standard ammunition pouch when folded, deployable by a single soldier within two to three minutes, and controllable with a minimal-footprint transmitter and goggles that clip to a helmet. The name is apt — the folded package conceals a surprisingly capable strike weapon inside what appears from the outside to be a small cylinder.
The folding arm mechanism is the engineering centerpiece of the Matryoshka. Four propeller arms fold flat against the body in a configuration that allows the entire aircraft, battery, and warhead to collapse into roughly the volume of a 1.5-liter water bottle. On deployment, the arms lock into place with an audible click and the motors spin up within seconds. This rapid deployment is specifically designed for the scenario where an infantry squad spots an enemy position at short range and needs an organic precision strike asset immediately — without the delay of requesting artillery or waiting for a dedicated drone team to set up and launch a larger platform.
Fielded in June 2026, the Matryoshka entered the inventory during a period when Russian doctrine had fully embraced FPV drones as the primary anti-personnel and anti-vehicle weapon at the squad and platoon level. Russian units were receiving multiple FPV units per squad, fundamentally changing close-combat tactics by enabling any squad to engage targets at 3-5 km range without direct line of sight. The Matryoshka's ultra-compact form factor extended this capability to the individual soldier level — a doctrinal evolution that Ukrainian forces were simultaneously pursuing through their own compact strike drone development programs.
